Believing that music performance and education are interconnected, Andrew (Andy) Hunt has experience in a number of performance and educational venues.  He has served on staff at the Stetson University Clarinet Clinic for multiple years, has taught private clarinet lessons to students of all ages, has taught band classes and assisted in public school classrooms, and has taught ESOL lessons to Chinese students. A native of Greensboro, NC, Hunt began playing clarinet and piano at the age of eleven.  He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Instrumental Music Education, with minors in Spanish and Psychology, from Stetson University in 2014.  He received the William E. Duckwitz Talent Scholarship, the Lewis and Geraldine Schmidt & Charles and Irma Fix Scholarship, the Tinsley Scholarship, the Mattie Kelly Music Scholarship, and was a Presser Foundation Scholarship recipient. During his time at Stetson, he maintained an active private studio, taught in public school music classes (including music theory) and held a number of leadership positions across campus, including President of Stetson’s chapter of the Collegiate National Association for Music Education. 

 

In May 2016, he graduated from Ball State University with a Master of Music degree in Clarinet Performance.  While at Ball State, he served as the clarinet studio teaching assistant; worked with front office staff on various projects related to alumni relations and community outreach; and performed with the Muncie Symphony Orchestra, the Muncie Symphony Orchestra’s Outreach Woodwind Quintet, the Ball State Wind Ensemble, the Ball State Symphony Orchestra, the New Music Ensemble, and a number of chamber groups. Additionally, he appeared as a soloist with the Eastern and Central Indiana Chamber Orchestra on November 22, 2015, performing Carl Nielsen’s Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra, Op. 57.

 

In May 2017, Hunt earned a Professional Performance Certificate in Clarinet Performance from the Pennsylvania State University, where he performed with the Penn State Symphonic Wind Ensemble, the Philharmonic Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra, the Clarinet Choir, and in a number of chamber groups. He was also selected to perform on the Graduate Recognition Recitals in January 2017 and January 2018.  Furthermore, he performed Scott McAllister’s Black Dog as a soloist with the Penn State Symphonic Wind Ensemble on February 28, 2018, as a co-winner of the 2017-2018 Symphonic Wind Ensemble Concerto Competition.  In May 2018, he completed a second Professional Performance Certificate, this time focusing on clarinet pedagogy and literature.  Outside of school, he performed with the Nittany Valley Symphony Orchestra, Williamsport Symphony Orchestra, State College Choral Festival’s performance of Mozart’s Requiem, the Little German Band of State College, and was on the sub list for the Pennsylvania Chamber Orchestra.  

 

Currently, Hunt is pursuing teaching, performing, and administrative positions in music, hoping to eventually become a university studio professor.  His primary clarinet teachers include Anthony Costa, Elizabeth Crawford, Lynn Musco, and Shawn Copeland.  His professional affiliations include the International Clarinet Association, the National Association for Music Education, Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
