Educational Philosophy

Believing in the interconnectedness between teaching and performing, Andy strives to instill strong musicianship, a sense of responsibility, and personal growth within his students.  Through the arts, we are able to make better people- people who are dedicated, motivated, responsible, trustworthy, and passionate- which transfers into all aspects of society. Andy always encourages his students to think creatively and to be open-minded as they are learning so that they may eventually learn to teach themselves. Education is a powerful tool which can be used to effect positive change in the world, and it is Andy's goal to empower young people to go out into the world and give them the skills they need to think critically and combat life's many challenges.

"Schoolmastering's so different, so important, don't you think? To be influencing         those who are going to grow up and matter to the world."

                               -James Hilton, Goodbye, Mr. Chips

With experience in a variety of educational outlets, Andy strives for excellence in his teaching and expects high-quality work from his students.  His lessons focus primarily on building fundamentals of clarinet technique, using scales, method books and études to supplement repertoire. His technical approach encompasses all the main aspects of clarinet technique, including tone, articulation, correct finger movement, and musicality. Andy's students have won top seats in All-District and All-State ensembles, have been accepted into undergraduate music programs with scholarships, and are leaders within their respective ensembles and programs.
